2 The Bilingual Language Mode In this mode, bilinguals interact with one another. First they adopt a language to use together, what is known as the 'base language' (also the 'host' or 'matrix' language). ). Usually, bilinguals go through their daily interactions with other bilinguals quite unaware of the many psychological and sociolinguistic factors that interact to help choose one language over another.
In one survey, they presented a forced-choice question about the obscure Agricultural Trade Act of 1978 in two forms. When asked merely if they favored or opposed the act, 69 percent of respondents volunteered that they did not know, but when explicitly offered a 'don't know' response, fully 90 percent of them took it, a difference of 21 percentage points. In a replication study, similar results were obtained about the little-known Monetary Control Bill of 1979. Both studies revealed that respondents' level of education shaped reported attitudes when the 'don't know' response was not offered, educated people being significantly more likely to volunteer that they did not have an attitude.
