There are significant tax consequences of purchasing medical insurance. If a person (or spouse) is given medical insurance as an employee benefit, the cost of the premium is completely tax deductible to the employer and tax free to the employee.
The tax savings can be substantial. •• Almost all medical plans have some component of managed care. Because of the high cost of medical insurance premiums, many employers have begun to buy cheaper Disability (Income) Insurance The chance of a person becoming disabled at some point during his or her professional career is much greater than the chance of dying during that same time. 1 Although death is certainly a more important event than disability, too many professionals carry life insurance but do not include disability insurance as part of their financial risk management plan.
Social Security retirement payments are not large to begin with. In the future, higher income earners will pay more (both while working and in retirement) to help keep the system solvent. So although Social Security is not expected to disappear in the future, most dentists should not plan for Social Security to be a major part of their retirement income.
