MS Pym 94, fol. ' Among the discarded jumble Edith discovers a tarnished silver picture frame containing the photo of the young clergyman lost years before to Alice's affections: Oh yes, he had fallen in love with her - one could admit it after all these years - and many people said that Alice had loved him too, even though she had married somebody else. Mr Gorringe wouldn't have been considered a good marriage, although he had been so handsome, dear Arthur, people didn't look like that in these days.
Pym researched the short fiction requirements of a variety of publications, especially those aimed at a popular women's audience. In a 1953 letter to literary agents Curtis Brown Ltd, she demurs, 'My stories aren't good enough for a highbrow magazine, even if such things existed which they hardly do, and were in fact written with women's magazines in mind' (MS Pym 147). Among her papers is a handwritten alphabetical listing of the word limits or special preferences of a variety of magazines for choosing fiction.
Unarguably these are among the best the collection contains. The less successful stories, however, - the fragments, rejections, and discarded efforts - though sometimes wooden, artificial, or underdeveloped, contain moments of brightness. At their worst, they reveal an unpracticed voice struggling for a mature style; at their best they reflect Pym' s special polish, with familiar themes and recurring characters. Miss Doggett and her much put-upon companion Jessie Morrow of 'So, Some Tempestuous Morn' will make further appearances in Crampton Hod net and fane and Prudence; Mark and Sophia Ainger and cat Faustina are borrowed for 'The Christmas Visit' from the then unpublishable An Unsuitable Attachment; Ned, the manipulative homosexual of The Sweet Dove Died, 26 Barbara Pym and the Novel of Manners becomes a priggish dinner partner in 'Across a Crowded Room'.
