Expressionism used to be a modernist move, before everything in poetry and portray, originating in Germany at the start of the 20 th century. Its normal trait is to offer the area completely from a subjective standpoint, distorting it greatly for emotional impact so as to evoke moods or rules. Expressionist artists sought to precise that means or emotional event instead of actual fact.

It would be uninstructive to lump the two authors together with those others and accord them identical treatment. In the present work, this problem is addressed by means of a general essay on the representation of Jews in twentieth-century English-language literature rather than by separate entries on Hemingway and Fitzgerald. Of course, individual contributors to this encyclopedia work from differing ideas of what constitutes antisemitism. With few exceptions, however, the terms antisemite and antisemitic have been used sparingly and conservatively.
A concerted effort has been made to reflect the widest possible variety of viewpoints. Chosen for their expertise, the contributors have been allowed to have their say rather than being limited to the presentation of an imaginary consensus view of the issues at hand. In the process of editing submissions, no attempt has been made to censor their findings or mold them into a uniform scheme of interpretation. All that has been asked of each is a deep knowledge of the sources and a willingness to engage them critically.
