Bonner was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on June 16, 1899, to Joseph and Mary Anne Bonner, and educated in the public schools of Brookline, a suburb of Boston. The only child among her three siblings to survive childhood, she excelled in music, writing, and the German language, and later attended Radcliffe College, majoring in English and comparative literature. , and taught at the Bluefield Colored High School. In Washington, she met the playwright GEORGIA DOUGLAS JOHNSON, whose celebrated “S” Street Salon became a gathering place for several writers and artists of the Harlem Renaissance movement.
